Uncovering the Gospel in Universities

Uncover is being used throughout universities across the UK both at ‘events weeks’ and in one-to-one evangelism. As students begin to investigate the gospel account of Luke, the Gospel is being preached and people are receiving Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Here is an update on what God is doing in universities.

Uncover GospelAs you read this, University Christian Unions across the UK are in the throes of running 'events weeks'. These weeks are designed to make a bigger impact and a greater noise on campus and to be focal points for each individual Christian student's ongoing personal evangelism.

... it's getting more challenging to 'Gossip the Gospel' in our universities

In some respects it's getting more challenging to 'Gossip the Gospel' in our universities. Last year in the UK we encountered the first instances of 'proselytisation' being prohibited.  The Christian Unions increasingly come under fire too from atheist and LGBT societies. The Students Unions, although still generally supportive, are a challenging place to work. British Biblical illiteracy is at an all-time high, and yet in spite of these tests there remains a great fascination with the person of Jesus Christ and we're seeing many people responding warmly to His good news.

A fortnight ago (3-7 Feb.) I had the total privilege of joining Falmouth Christian Union for their highly creative events week. Some of the responses were really fascinating; a real concern about the presence of suffering and evil in this world juxtaposed with surprise in the historical reality of the person of Jesus. And we saw fruit! A handsome handful asked to find out more and others said 'Yes...Count me in!'

Last week (10-14) saw the Swansea and Bangor 'events weeks'. First and foremost they were a wonderful expression of Christian unity and partnership: a sizeable team from the OCCA (Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics) joined Swansea and a team comprised of Lindsay Brown, Charlie Butler (UCCF Christian Persuaders Team) and guests from IFES movements across Europe). The students were wonderfully creative, the churches were generous, the Gospel was clearly proclaimed and we saw exciting and wonderful fruit. Some 180 people responded either wanting to know more about Jesus and to look at one of his eyewitness accounts or, praise God, they ticked 'count me in'! What an encouragement and what a privilege to be able to be involved in some small way in this work!

In coming weeks we're going to see the Aberystwyth mission with Michael Green and Michael Ots as well as events in Cardiff Met University and Newport. And then finally, 7-9 March is our training weekend for all student mission leaders across Wales. Some 150 students are going to get together in Cefn Lea (the same place we're going on the church weekend) for a weekend of missional Bible teaching and training!

Please do be praying with us; thanks for what we've seen; wisdom, strength and courage for what's yet to come!

If you'd like to find out more please do get in touch and I can send you through a news/prayer letter!
